I just wanted to add that having thought a little more about this, I think Kevin (and also Will Fleisher in a question we didnt get to) is absolutely right that (1) wouldnt be a reasonable thing to believe. So I would fall back on some other replies to the objection instead, like the fact that peerhood is rare (mentioned by Will).
