11/23/04: I have now completed the list of further readings for the seminar. Kenny will be presenting Chapter 20 in the last week of seminar. After the last seminar meeting (which is in two weeks, on 12/7), you are all invited out for drinks.
11/15/04: I have now posted all the seminar handouts (so far). I have also added some further readings for the coming weeks.
11/09/04: I have posted a couple of readings on probabilistic explanation. These are relevant to the "coin tossing" examples discussed this week. Reminder: please come up with paper topics soon, and consult with me about them.
10/25/04: I've posted lots of (almost all) further readings for the second half of the course.
10/25/04: I've posted Fabrizio's handout for chapter 10 and 11.
10/17/04: I've posted the handout from Alan Hájek's guest lecture. I have also posted his PhD. dissertation on probabilities of conditionals (this is a real classic!).
10/12/04: I've posted a handout (intended to supplement Jen's for chapter 7, which will be posted soon) on Stalnaker and Lance's argument against the import-export (and-if) principle. I think what both S&L and Bennett say about this is false, but that there is something interesting (i.e., a reductio of something interesting!) in the vicinity of their example & argument.
09/29/04: I've posted Peter's handout on chapter 6. And, I've added a link to John's paper on epistemic modals to the readings for week 5, to go along with chapter 6. John gives a neat way out of the (apparent) trilemma Bennett gives at the beginning of chapter 7 (as applied, say, to Lycan's epistemic modal approach to indicatives). I also added a link to a recent manuscript of Weatherson's on epistemic modals and conditionals (which borrows a lot from John).
09/20/04: I just realized that the entire Bennett book is online! And, I have added several further readings for the weeks to come. Also, I have decided to skip chapters 8 and 9, so that we can cover more on subjunctives. We need volunteers for weeks 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15. See the syllabus for which readings these will correspond to in Bennett.
09/08/04: I have added a link to Alan Hájek's SEP entry on Interpretations of Probability. This is a nice introduction to probability and its various ``interpretations'' or ``kinds''. And, I have posted my notes for this week (and next!). After that, I step down and we move on to Chapter 6 (student presentations begin there!).
09/08/04: Ned's has several copies of the Bennett book in stock (thanks for the tip, Aaron!).
09/06/04: I have posted my notes for tomorrow's seminar. As you can tell from the handout, we will probably not get through both chapter 2 and chapter 3 tomorrow. That's OK. We'll just carry over whatever remains until next week. Alan Hájek will be presenting chapter 5 for us in October 5! So, we will skip that (i.e., we'll go from 4 to 6), which means (mercifully) that my last week of presenting is either next week or the following one (depending on how fast things go).
09/03/04: I have scanned the first four chapters of Bennett's book. You can download them here. You'll need the latest version of Acrobat Reader to work with this file.
09/02/04: Bennett's book can be ordered online from various sources. You ought to be able to get one in a couple of days if you order now. It's important that you read the first 3 chapters before next time. There is one copy in the departmental office (in Dave's bookshelf for course books). You can photocopy the first three chapters of that one in the meantime. I have also added a link to Grice's "Logic and Conversation" to our online readings for this week.
